Sania
Sania’s mother died of TB just after she was born. The difficult delivery, left Sania with lasting physical and mental problems. As an infant and young child, she lived with her grandmother who lives just around the corner from Casa Balo. She has an uncle and family in the Howrah area, but no one cared deeply for her.
Because she was considered a burden with her physical and mental disabilities, Sania’s grandmother gave permission for her to live at Casa Balo. At that time, she was walking on all fours, so Balo immediately provided her with intense physical therapy on her legs and right arm. Now Sania can walk normally and use her arm with care. Her hand is still twisted, but there is hope for continued improvements. Sania visits her grandmother regularly, sometimes staying with her. Now that she is capable, her grandmother appreciates her help, and she encourages Sania to stay, regardless of the school day. Sania knows that she always has a warm meal and bed at Casa Balo, and she is thriving as a thoughtful and skilled young woman.
