The Balo English Medium School is located in on Alam Mistri Lane, number 1, in Pilkhana, Howrah, near the Karbala Mosque and a five-minute walk from Casa Balo.
The Balo school nurtures, feeds, and educates 350 students from the Kolkata slums (see admissions) from PreK through class 12 every day from 9AM to 3PM. Dedicated teachers implement exceptionally high quality lessons Monday through Friday which are complimented by extracurricular activities including sports and arts on Saturdays.
Balo focuses on teaching the whole child. Instruction is in English which is the most viable way to provide extensive education and employment opportunities for the children. Having a solid foundation of spoken and written English is key to students’ life success.
English education is often a challenge because most students’ families are illiterate, and they are the first generation attend school. Balo teachers and directors work hard to incorporate the parents into the learning process and highlight their children’s accomplishments to instill a sense of pride and value in learning. This is done through regular parent teacher conferences and formal gatherings (see family responsibilities).
